1932 Indian Head Eagle $10 – MS 64

One of the most historically significant dates in all of U.S. gold coinage, the 1932 Indian Head Eagle is a true key date — struck in the final years before President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s Executive Order 6102 ended the era of circulating American gold coins forever. In MS 64, this is a Choice Mint State example of exceptional quality and rarity.

Why the 1932 Is Special

The 1932 Philadelphia Indian Head Eagle had a mintage of just 4,463,000 coins — but this number is deeply misleading. In 1933, Roosevelt’s gold recall order required Americans to surrender their gold coins to the Federal Reserve. The vast majority of 1932 Eagles were melted down, never entering collector hands. Surviving Mint State examples represent a tiny fraction of the original mintage, making high-grade pieces genuinely scarce and increasingly sought after.

The 1932 issue holds the distinction of being one of the last Indian Head Eagles ever struck — production of the series ended the following year. Owning one in MS 64 is a rare privilege.

Design

The obverse features a bold Native American portrait facing left in a full feathered war bonnet, set against thirteen stars, with the date below — a design inspired by President Theodore Roosevelt’s drive to make American coinage worthy of a great nation. The reverse displays a proud bald eagle perched on an olive branch with inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, IN GOD WE TRUST, and TEN DOLLARS.

About the Grade – MS 64

MS 64 is a Choice Mint State designation — a coin with full original mint luster, no wear, and only a few minor contact marks or blemishes. At this level, the 1932 Eagle displays vibrant, rich golden surfaces with sharp strike detail throughout. MS 64 examples occupy the sweet spot between affordability and exceptional quality, and are significantly scarcer than lower-grade examples.

A landmark coin from the final chapter of American circulating gold — the 1932 Indian Head Eagle in MS 64 is a cornerstone piece for any serious U.S. gold collection.
