About the Grade – PMG AU 58

PMG’s Choice About Uncirculated 58 is one of the finest grades attainable for circulated currency. A note graded AU 58 exhibits only the most minimal evidence of handling — nearly full original paper crispness, bright colors, sharp corners, and strong embossing. At this level, the note appears essentially new to the naked eye. PMG 58 Confederate notes are significantly scarcer than lower-grade examples and represent a true condition rarity for the series.

Design

The obverse of the T-69 $5 note features a dramatic central vignette of the Virginia State Capitol building in Richmond — the seat of Confederate government — flanked by ornate lathe-work borders and the large numeral “5.” A portrait medallion appears at lower right, with handwritten serial numbers, plate letters, and period signatures of Confederate treasury officials. The reverse displays the iconic teal/green Confederate back design with bold “FIVE” lettering and four ornate “5” corner medallions.

Historical Significance

The 1864 series was the last currency ever issued by the Confederate States of America. Printed as the Confederacy faced military collapse and runaway inflation, these notes circulated briefly before becoming worthless upon Confederate surrender in April 1865. Many were discarded or destroyed — making high-grade survivors extraordinarily rare after more than 160 years.

The T-69 $5 note is one of the most visually striking Confederate issues, with its Capitol vignette serving as a powerful reminder of the Confederate government’s Richmond headquarters and the weight of history contained in every fiber of the note.

An extraordinary survivor from America’s most defining conflict — the 1864 Confederate $5 T-69 in PMG AU 58 is a museum-caliber piece of Civil War history.
