About the Liberty Head Nickel
Designed by Chief Engraver Charles E. Barber and struck from 1883 to 1912, the Liberty Head Nickel — also known as the V Nickel — is one of the most recognizable coins of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The obverse features a left-facing portrait of Liberty crowned with a coronet inscribed “LIBERTY,” surrounded by 13 stars. The reverse displays a large Roman numeral “V” encircled by a wreath, with “E PLURIBUS UNUM” above and “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” around the border.
The 1901 and 1903 dates fall within the series’ most stable and well-struck production years, offering solid detail and honest circulated character that tells the story of coins that actually circulated in early American commerce.
